Total luck but I believe you can maximize your chances based on the break you use. Unfortunately, the racking style of the opponent is still a factor.

| If its all luck, then you wouldnt know where to hit the rack to maximize your chances...so it that skill? It is only luck when you close your eyes, rare back an knock the crap out of the rack, hoping you might get lucky. There are 8 ball breaks, 9 ball breaks, 10 ball breaks, one pocket breaks, etc. "To know, creates knowledge. To attempt creates consistancy. And to succeed creates skill." My vote...skill. AT |

| IMO - It's luck to make it, but skill to increase the odds of doing so. |

I think it takes skill to maintain cue ball control while trying to make the 8-ball. I have a hard time keeping the cue ball on the table while giving it enough 'umph' to make the 8... my cue ball goes flying more often than I make the 8
.... I guess I need more skill |

| It's luck if you break from the first ball. It's still luck if you break from the second ball but your chances increase. |

| If it is all luck, why do some players have multiple patches? I dont mean 2 or 3 , but 7 or 8 and up.And usually it is the same pocket. |

You can watch all the greatest pros including Efren Reyes, Bustamante, Imonen etc breaking 8 or 9 ball racks. If this was skill, then there would be no game afterwards. If there was a secret or skill on breaking, these guys would have found out loooooooooong time ago. It is luck. Heck, I made 8 on the break several times and I didnt break it any different than usual.

There's a technique for it that Steve Mizerak discovered that most league players know about. I believe he set a record for the most times it was made in a row with a couple hundred. I used to break from the side rail all of the time and would routinely make the 8 on the break. I stopped when I lost a tournament on a hill-hill match when I broke, made the 8 and scratched. I also would prefer to get a better spread (breaking from the side usually results in a lot of clusters) and then break and run rather than just sinking the 8.
Just my 2 cents. YMMV. |
